Choose by scale

The right size should feel obvious.

See the artwork against furniture you already know. Compare every size in inches. Then tape the outline at home.

Dimensions are shown in inches, with centimeters beside them.

One useful rule

Screens make every artwork look roughly the same size. Your furniture brings the proportion back.

Put the wall back in the picture.

Start with the shape. Choose a current size. Then enter the exact width of your furniture or open wall.

1 · Choose the shape
2 · Choose the artwork size

The buttons and result use width × height.

3 · Choose your reference

Start with a familiar size, or enter your own.

The artwork spans 50% of the furniture width.

The drawing compares listed artwork dimensions. A frame can add to the outside measurement. Confirm final outer dimensions on the product page before specifying.

Furniture silhouettes are illustrative. Width is compared to scale; furniture height and hanging height are not specified.

Three starting points

A little structure. Plenty of room for instinct.

These are useful ways to begin, not laws your home has to obey. High ceilings, stacked furniture, and gallery walls can call for a different balance.

01

Measure the furniture first.

Above a sofa, bed, or console, its width is the clearest reference you already own.

02

Aim for 50–67%.

Of the furniture width, that range often gives a single artwork a clear presence.

03

Leave space around it.

Try 6–10 inches between furniture and artwork, then adjust for the wall and the piece.

Buying a surprise?

Use a furniture measurement only when you know it. Otherwise, choose the artwork as the surprise and decide the wall together. A beautiful gift should not depend on a lucky guess.

Have a small wall?

Select Open wall in the comparison tool and enter the width you measured. Use the tape test next to confirm height and breathing room.

Before you decide

Let the wall answer.

Screens flatten scale. A taped outline puts the decision back in the room.

  1. 01Mark the artwork’s width and height directly on the wall with painter’s tape. For smaller sizes, paper or cardboard works too.
  2. 02Place the center near eye level, then check the gap above the furniture.
  3. 03Check it in morning and evening light. If the scale feels right in both, you have a stronger answer.

Every current size, in plain sight.

Tape them both.

The smaller outline shows how much space remains. The larger one shows how much presence you want. Your wall will make the distinction quickly.
